North Carolina is known for beautiful mountains, but few know that the central portion of the Tar Heel State is home to the Uwharrie Mountains, formed 500 million years ago. These mountains once hovered around 20,000 feet, but now have trickled down to just over 1,000 feet. The area is also home to America's first gold rush (1799).
